A margarine making plant includes packaging machinery and by-pass means upstream of the packaging position to return excess feed through heaters to the inlet end of the margarine processing plant. Packaging machines 7 receive margarine from coolers 6. Excess material passes via preheaters 9 and a heater 10 to the emulsion inlet conduit 1.
