Abstract

1,134,091. Testing radio transmitters. MARCONI CO. Ltd. 11 Jan., 1966 [8 Feb., 1965], No. 5465/65. Heading H4L. [Also in Division H1] A dissipative attenuator for connection across the output of a radio-frequency generator (when testing) consists of one or more resistors 2 mounted in tanks 1 full of a liquid which is allowed to boil to dissipate the power. The resistors are connected in a series, parallel or series-parallel fashion each in a separate tank. Each resistor consists of an elongated web 2 of woven asbestos interwoven with a resistance element of nichrome tape 7, the web being supported under tension by stainless steel clamping members 8 adjacent opposite walls of the tank. Connection to the clamping member is made by stainless steel rods 5 which pass through the walls of the tank and are associated with screw-threaded tensioning means 11. The clamps and the portions of the rods within the tank are provided with an insula tive coating 9 of hot-moulded fibreglass. The liquid used is preferably distilled water which has been passed through an ion exchanger.
