Abstract
1,126,465. Hydrogen; carbon disulphide. I. G. NIXON. 14 Sept., 1965 [14 Sept., 1964], No. 37470/64. Heading C1A. Hydrogen and carbon disulphide are simultaneously produced in a process wherein hydrogen sulphide or a sulphur compound yielding hydrogen sulphide under the reaction conditions, e.g. organic mercaptans and disulphides obtained as waste products in the petroleum industry, and at least one C 1 -C 10 hydrocarbon, e.g. methane, ethane, propane, butanes and straightrun gasoline fractions, are heated at an elevated temperature under conditions resulting in pyrolysis of a major proportion of the hydrocarbon to form hydrogen, the materials (the hydrocarbon or mixture of hydrocarbons being regarded as one material) being heated either in admixture or sequentially in the same reaction zone with maintenance of pyrolysis conditions, and the resulting reaction mixture quenched, e.g. with a dry recycled gas stream (followed by a water quench if necessary). The reaction mixture may be treated for the separation of carbon disulphide and excess hydrogen sulphide forming compound and the resultant crude hydrogen washed with oil under pressure to remove any methane. The hydrogen may be fed to a petroleum refining process, e.g. hydrodesulphurization, hydrofining, hydrocracking and hydrogenation, and the amount of hydrogen produced may be controlled in accordance with the requirements of such a process by adjustment of the ratio of hydrocarbons to hydrogen sulphide forming compound fed to the reaction zone. Solid catalysts of the type described in the literature for the cracking of C 1 -C 10 hydrocarbons and/or the synthesis of carbon disulphide from C 1 -C 10 hydrocarbons and sulphur, may be present in the reaction zone, e.g. nickel oxide, the sulphides of the 8th Group, 4th Period, 4th Series of the Periodic Table (after Mendeleeff), or the phosphates of zirconium, thorium or copper. Temperatures in the reaction zone may be between 800 and 1500‹ C. The hydrocarbon may be subjected to a preliminary cracking in a heated zone preferably containing a catalyst described in the literature for the cracking of hydrocarbons, a substantial proportion of the carbon resulting from the cracking being deposited therein. The hydrogen sulphide or hydrogen sulphide/ hydrocarbon mixture may be derived from the petroleum refining process to which the hydrogen produced by the invention is fed.
