Abstract
A tappet, camshaft or rocker arm for an internal combustion engine has at least its bearing surface portions made of an alloy consisting, by weight of:- .C.3 - 3.6% .Si.2 - 3% .Mn.0.7 - 1.25% .Ni.0.15 - 0.7% .Cr.0.4 - 1.5% .Mo.0.15 - 0.7% .Ti.0.1 - 1% Fe and impurities, balance. P and S are the main impurities and should not exceed 0.2% and 0.01% respectively. The Ti is present in the alloy as carbide and/or nitride. The components may be hardened by heating at 1580 DEG F. for 30 minutes and then quenching in oil.
