Abstract

Bromine contaminant is removed from chlorinated hydrocarbons containing as an essential component at least one of CHCl3, CCl4, C2HCl3 and C2Cl4, by contacting the contaminated chlorinated hydrocarbon with a phenol or aniline. Other chlorinated hydrocarbons may also be present. After removal of the bromine by reaction with the phenol or aniline the chlorinated hydrocarbon may be recovered from excess of the phenol or aniline or brominated derivatives thereof by distillation. The contaminated chlorinated hydrocarbons treated may be obtained by chlorination of chlorinated hydrocarbons containing brominated hydrocarbons as impurities, the latter mixture being obtained by chlorination of hydrocarbons.
