Abstract
1,118,678. Oil burners. EMERSON ELECTRIC CO. 26 Jan., 1966 [29 March, 1965], No. 3583/66. Heading F4T. The fuel oil and the combustion air supplied to a burner (not shown) are heated by an electric motor driving a fuel oil pump 80 and an air blower 70. The motor comprises stator windings 36 and a rotor 24 disposed within a housing 30 formed by an end shield 21 and an end bell 22. Fuel oil is fed to the housing 30 by a passage 46 in the end shield and flows through a passage 51 in the stator core 35, through a screen 49 in the end bell 22, through a passage 53 in the rotor, between the stator and the rotor, and through a passage 41 in the end shield 21 to the suction port 45 of the oil pump. The latter comprises an externally toothed gear keyed to one end of the motor shaft 25 and an internally toothed gear journalled in a housing 84 formed in the end shield 21. The pump discharges through a port 94 in a cover-plate 91 to a piston valve 98 controlling the flow of oil to a conduit 5 leading to the burner. A spring 106 acting on the piston is adjusted by a screw 108 and the suction side of the piston is connected by a passage 93 to the suction side of the pump. By-pass passages (not shown) for returning oil to the suction side when the pump pressure exceeds a limit are provided. The blower comprises a housing surrounding the motor and comprising a scroll web 64 and two side walls 62, 63. The air enters through openings 64<SP>1</SP> in the side wall 62 controlled by an apertured rotatable plate 65 and is discharged through a duct 4 to the burner. A blower wheel 70 is mounted by a hub 71 to the motor shaft 25 and comprises blades 75 which revolve within a passage 78 between the scroll web 64 and the motor housing 31. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the oil does not flow into the motor housing but instead flows through an annular chamber 131 in the end shield 121 of the motor housing.
