Abstract
An inorganic filler for glycidyl polyethers of dihydric phenols and of novolacs has a particle size distribution such that (in cumulative %) .<1%..........>420m .0.3-8%..........>250m .14-41%..........>105m .42-68%..........>53m .65-85%..........>10m (fully defined by a group, not shown), and comprises at least 58% by weight of a material having a coefficient of linear thermal expansion not above 8 x 10-6 in./in./ DEG C. Examples of such materials are sand, fused quartz, beryl, and LiAl silicate, which may be mixed with alumina, Zr silicate, or pigments. The preparation of resins by the reaction of epichlorohydrin and NaOH with bisphenol A and with a condensate of paratertiary butylphenol and formaldehyde is described. Conventional curing agents and accelerators can be added.ALSO:An inorganic material having a particle size distribution such that (in cumulative per cent): .<1%.>420m .0.3-8%.>250m .14-41%.>105m .42-68%.>53m .65-85%.>10m and having a coefficient of linear thermal expansion not above 8 x 10-6 in./in./ DEG C., is used as a filler for epoxy resins. The full distribution is defined by a graph (not shown), which shows preferred per cent in each size range. Examples of minerals are sand, fused quartz, beryl and LiAl silicate.
