Abstract

1,118,128. Centrifugal separator; screw centrifuges. BIRD MACHINE CO. 31 March, 1966 [4 Oct., 1965]. No. 14349/66. Headings BID and B2P. The rotating drum of a centrifugal separator (Fig. 1, not shown) comprises a cylindrical portion (20) in the form of a grid with circumferentially and axially extending rows of apertures (26) (Fig. 5, not shown), each aperture receiving a replaceable screen 30 and the screens being retained by releasable strap clamps (42) which hold flanges 34, 36 of screens 30 against the external surface of the drum (Figs. 6, 7, not shown). The straining part of each screen 30 is formed by parallel wires 40 (Fig. 4, not shown). Strap clamps (42) each engage flanges of two adjacent circumferential rows of screens and comprise two straps (44, 46) extending each round 180‹ of the drum and fastened together at their ends by clamps (48 . . . 51) and their fastening nuts (52) and bolts (54) (Fig. 2, not shown). The straps may be screwed at mid points (56, 57) to the drum, permanently or only during assembly of screens 30 into place. The screens 30 may project inwards of the drum and replaceable spacing members (28) (Figs. 6, 7) may extend circumferentially inside the drum between rows. The separator drum comprises a non-straining centrifuging section (12) with liquid outlet (14) upstream of portion (20) and a helical screw (16) carrying slurry through portion (20) to solids outlet (18).
