Abstract

a -Fluoroacrylic esters are prepared by hydrolysing an a - hydroxymethyl - a - fluoromalonic ester with a mineral acid with vigorous agitation, heating the product to bring about decarboxylation, and recovering the a -fluoroacrylic ester thus formed. a -Fluoroacrylic acid and a -fluoro-b -hydroxy-propionic esters may be obtained as by-products. The a -hydroxymethyl-a -fluoromalonic ester may be obtained by reacting an a -fluoromalonic ester with formaldehyde as a mixture in aqueous solution in the presence of a base added portionwise so as to keep the reaction medium alkaline while bringing the temperature to 40-50 DEG C.
