Abstract
1,114,735. Vehicle roofs. WAGGONFABRIK TALBOT KOMM. GES. 17 Dec., 1965, No.53589/65. Heading B7L. A rail vehicle comprises a spring counterbalanced roof 1 (similar to that described and claimed in Specification 829,473) swingable down on single or double supports 2 to either side of the vehicle about a raisable bearing 5 at each end of the vehicle, the roof sealingly resting on the top frame 3 when not swung down, and being swingable by operating means acting on the support 2 at one vehicle end only, at least one shaft extending the length of the vehicle and actuated by swinging of one support to ensure movement of the other support in synchronism with the one support. In an embodiment, Fig. 3, a chain 9 passes over a sprocket 7a on a longitudinal shaft 7 common to a similar sprocket wheel at the other end of the vehicle and mounted in a hollow side wall of the vehicle. The roof is raised before swinging by guidedly moving the bearings 5 upwards by means of cables 8a linked to a nut 11 movable along a handcranked threaded shaft 4a. The raising cables 8a pass along the vehicle to the bearing 5 at the other end of the vehicle. The operating means comprise a pinion 24 attached to the struts 2, meshing with a toothed section 22a rotatable to swing the roof 1 by means of a nut 23 movable along a hand-cranked threaded shaft 4b. A bell-crank 29 engages a projection 30 and a projection 31 on the sector 22a to hold the roof down. In another embodiment, a pinion attached to the struts 2, meshes with rack teeth on a carriage movable on rollers along a rail across the vehicle end. The carriage is moved by a nut and threaded shaft turned through a sprocket drive to firstly raise and then swing the roof 1 down. A pair of levers look the roof 1 upright during raising and are actuated by a cam mechanism to allow the roof to swing down. In a further embodiment, only two side flaps of the roof 1 are initially raised by turning a threaded shaft across the vehicle end. The struts 2 are fixed to a doublygrooved pulley segment around which are wound cables attached to nuts movable along a threaded shaft to swing the roof down. In yet another embodiment, the roof can only be swung about bearings 5. The roof has partcylindrical faces which seal against synthetic rubber and metal strips on the top of the vehicle side walls, or against synthetic plastics tube. The roof is supported at each end by a pivoted single strut locked at its lower end between toggles releasable by shafts. A gear segment is fixed to the strut 2 and is engaged by a toothed lever pivoted to the vehicle and rotatable by movement of a nut along a threaded shaft, to swing the roof down.
