Abstract

1,114,414. Space vehicles. BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORPORATION (OPERATING) Ltd. 16 June, 1965 [18 June, 1964], No. 23219/64. Heading B7W. A space vehicle which includes a final stage intended to travel beyond the earth's atmosphere, and a first stage intended to accompany the final stage during the first part of launching, and then become separated from it, comprises an assembly of components grouped together, including at least two modules which are shaped so that individually they are capable of flight in the atmosphere with substantial aerodynamic lift, each module of the first stage having a similar delta planform, with an elongated nose and a deep cross-section to accommodate large quantities of fuel, and having identical basic structure and each module of the first stage having a rear propulsion nozzle so placed in the assembly that it can operate prior to separation of the stages from one another. Each module comprises a lifting body of considerable depth to accommodate fuel, the under surface 32 being so shaped that three such modules may be connected together in an assembly (Figs. 2X, 2Y, not shown). A fixed fin 26 and outwardly-pivoting fins 28 and an adjustable rocket propulsion unit 36 are provided. Two modules comprise the first stage and the other the final stage, apparatus (Figs. 17A, 17B, not shown) being described for connecting the modules together and for transferring fuel from one module to another. Other shapes of module and arrangements of grouping to form first and subsequent stages are described.
