Abstract

Inosinic acid is prepared by a fermentation process which comprises culturing an adeninerequiring microorganism capable of producing inosinic acid in an aqueous nutrient medium containing adenine and, at least, a source of carbon and nitrogen in the presence of at least one of the compounds selected from the group consisting of guanine, hypoxanthine, guanosine, inosine, ribonucleic acid hydrolysate, derivatives of guanosine and derivatives of hypoxanthine under aerobic conditions at a temperature of from about 25-38 DEG C. and a pH of about 5.5-8.5. The culture medium may be synthetic or natural and may also contain inorganic compounds such as magnesium sulphate, sodium phosphate, potassium mono- or dihydrogen phosphate, iron sulphate or other iron salts, manganese chloride and calcium chloride. Biotin and/or other appropriate vitamins may also be present. After fermenting, suitably for 2-3 days, the inosinic acid may be recovered by conventional means such as ion exchange treatment, solvent extraction, precipitation with metallic salts or chromatography. Specific micro-organisms used are Micrococcus glutamicus, Brevibacterium ammoniagenes and Bacillus subtilis.
