Abstract

Acrylamide and 2-aminoethyl methacrylate hydrochoride are copolymerized in aqueous solution in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, thiourea and copper sulphate. The polymer solution obtained is used in the treatment of paper (see Division D2).ALSO:A paper comprises a web of cellulosic fibres containing water-soluble inter-polymers of a mixture of at least one amide CH2=CRCONH2 and an aminoalkyl ester CH2=CRCOOCnH2n NH2, or a mineral acid salt thereof, wherein R is H or CH3 and n is 2 or 3. The interpolymer has a Staudinger mol. wt. of at least 5,000. The monomers are present in the ratio of at least 1.5 mole amide to 1 mol amino alkyl ester. The paper may contain 0.01-3% wt. inter-polymer. The salts may be derived from an acid of pKa below 4, e.g. HCl, HBr, H2SO4, HNO3 or H3PO4. The inter-polymers may contain up to 25% wt. of a monoethylenically unsaturated acrylic monomer having up to 7 carbon atoms e.g. N-methyloacrylamide, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, ethyl a -hydroxymethylol acrylate, alkyl and hydroxyalkyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids wherein the alkyl group has 1-3 C atoms. The polymer may contain polymerisation modifiers, e.g. thiourea and 2-mercaptoethanol, copper and peroxide catalysts and chelating agents. The polymer may be added, e.g. as a 0.01-10% aq. solution, to an aq. suspension of fibres to give a mixture of pH4. The fibre suspension may contain alum. The fibres may be then wet laid and dried. Alternatively an aq. soln. of the polymer may be applied to a preformed web which is then dried. The Specification also describes the above paper containing alum and/or a clay filler, and papers containing poly-2-aminoethyl methacrylate hydro-chloride, poly-N, N-dimethyl-2-aminoethyl methacrylate hydrochloride, poly-N-methyl-2-aminoethyl methacrylate hydrochloride, poly-2-aminoethyl methacrylate hydrochloride or polyacrylamide.
