A wire straightener rotated about wire moved longitudinally therethrough carries opposed straightening blocks bearing on and deflecting the wire, the blocks on one side of the wire being spaced axially apart a distance equal to the width of the blocks on the other side of the wire. Wire 86 to be straightened is fed from a braked reel (46), Fig. 1 (not shown), over a tension pulley (64) and further pulley (94), through a lubrication pocket and through two successive counter-rotating straighteners, mounted for rotation in a cradle 120 and driven by a common belt 200. Each straightener includes a hollow shaft 144 or 144<1> to which is releasably secured by ring means 176 or 176<1>, a pair of opposed magazines 162 and one not shown or 162<1>, 164<1>. Radially adjustable by set screws 196 in each magazine are a plurality of spaced wire-engaging blocks 194, two in each magazine 162, 162<1> and three in the other two magazines, the spacing of the blocks 194 in their magazines being equal to the width of the blocks. The blocks may be of any suitable material including ceramic carbide, lignum vitae or nylon. The straighteners may be oscillated along the wire by lever means (112) connected to the cradle 120 which moves along a slide bar 116.
