Abstract
Oxygen is extracted from carbon dioxide by electrolyzing a fused electrolyte containing at least one metal carbonate with lithium as the predominant cation on a molar basis and free from any substantial amount of sodium and feeding carbon dioxide to the electrolyte, oxygen being collected at the anode and carbon being deposited at the cathode. Typically the electrolyte consists of lithium carbonate with either lithium fluoride or lithium chloride and an oxide of boron, e.g. B2O3, at a temperature of ca. 650 DEG C., the carbon deposit being an adherent graphite. The carbon dioxide fed to the cell may be admixed with other gases as in respired air. A cell in which a carbon deposit has been formed by the above process may be operated as a fuel cell by feeding oxygen to it and removing from the cell the carbon dioxide generated. As shown the cell comprises a container (10) e.g. of Au, Au-Pd, Au-Ni, graphite or cathodically protected stainless steel closed by a cover (18) from which the electrodes (20), (22) and gas feed and exit tubes (14) and (16), (32) are suspended, the cell being divided into two compartments by a porous or perforated partition (30). The anode (20) may be of Au optionally alloyed with Ni or Pd and the cathode (22) may be of Ni, Co, ductile iron, or stainless steel.
