A door hinge which is adjustable in three dimensions comprises two hingeably connected plate elements, one carrying a ball mounted on a threaded rod or tube so as to be adjustable in one dimension relative to its associated plate element, and the other carrying a socket engaging the ball and mounted so as to be adjustable in any direction perpendicular to the adjustment dimension of the ball. The plate portion 1b of the element 1 has a tapped hole 3 carrying a screw-threaded rod 4 having at one end a part-spherical head (i.e. the ball 6) and at the other end a hexagonal cross-sectioned recess 7 for rotating the rod, or holding it when clamping the lock nut 8. The portion 2b has a bore 9 carrying a pin 11, with a clearance j, the pin having an enlarged head 12 with a recess 16 and a shoulder 13 which bears on the face 14 of 2b. The recess encloses a socket element 17 formed from plastic or sintered metal having a low frictional coefficient, receiving the ball, the latter has a peripheral extent greater than 180‹ (i.e. more than a hemisphere), and is retained in the socket by a collar 15 screwed on to the head comprising the socket. The other end of the pin 11 is screw-threaded and is clamped in the bore 9 by tightening a nut 18 with a lock washer 19 carried on the thread 21, thus bringing the shoulder 13 of the head 12 to bear on the face 14; the head has two flat faces whereby it may be held when tightening the nut 18. The ball is thus adjustable in a direction up or down along the axis of the hinge, by screwing the threaded rod 4, and the socket is adjustable perpendicular to said axis by movement of the pin 11 within the clearance j. The hinge is particularly useful for mounting automobile doors when the plates 1a and 1b may be welded to the vehicle door A and body B respectively.
