Abstract

Apparatus for applying a liquid to travelling filaments comprises a vessel from which liquid is withdrawn and applied to the filaments, a feed pipe delivering liquid below the surface of liquid in that vessel from a feed tank, a drain pipe withdrawing liquid from the bottom of the vessel and feeding it to a sump at a lower level than the vessel, via a pipe terminating in a valve which is open only while the level of liquid in the vessel is above a predetermined level. In the preferred embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), the liquid applying vessels (7), (7a) are fed from a head tank (4) by pipes (6), (6a), the head tank being supplied with liquid from a sump (1) by means of a pump (2) and pipe (3). Each vessel (7), (7a) is divided into two compartments by a weir wall (25), (25a), liquid flowing over the wall being returned to the sump (1) by pipes (12) (12a) and (13). The pipe (13) is connected to a vertical pipe (14), at the lower end of which there is a valve (15) actuated by means of a float (17) situated in a tank (16) and from which depends a rod (18) passing through the pipe (14). The lower end of the rod (18) is shaped to fit the valve seat in the lower end of the pipe (14), Fig. 2 (not shown). As the level of liquid in the vessel (7) rises above a predetermined level, the float (17) rises and opens the valve for liquid to pass to the sump (1); the pipes (12), (12a), (13) and (14) are always filled with liquid. The head tank (4) is provided with a similar float, rod and pipe arrangement. Some of the liquid from the head tank (4) is recirculated to the sump (1) by means of a pipe (33) which terminates in a filter (36). The feed of liquid to each container i.e. vessels (7), (7a) head tank (4) and sump (1), is effected below the surface level of the liquid in that container. The apparatus is described in relation to applying a spinning finish to artificial filaments.
