A disc brake, particularly for rail vehicles, having readily exchangeable brake rings 23 on each side of a carrier disc or wheel 21 is characterized in that the carrier disc or wheel and each brake ring are connected bayonet fashion by interengaging concentric grooves 24 and projections 22, means such as bolts 26, being provided to prevent relative disc/ring rotation. In the embodiment illustrated, dovetailed section grooves are formed between segmental projections, Fig. 3 (not shown), on each brake ring for receiving mating projections on the wheel. A heat-insulating disc 30 may be interposed the mating grooves and projections and cooling ribs or vanes 31, Fig. 3 may be provided on the rear faces of the brake rings. Clearances 28 and 29 allow initial centering of the rings and accommodates thermal expansion. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the bolts 26 are eccentrically arranged in bushes 4 in the rings to accommodate manufacturing tolerances in the disposition of the disc or wheel bores 27 receiving said bolts. In alternative embodiments, Figs. 1 and Figs. 5-9 (not shown), the projections are formed on the brake rings and are received bayonet fashion in grooves or recesses formed on the carrier disc or wheel. In the embodiments of Figs. 5 and 8, the rings are circumferentially locked to the carrier disc or wheel by wedges (61), (85), which are passed radially through aligned openings in the walls of the projecting segments defining the grooves and in the mating projections and which are bolted to the rings. Cooling ribs or vanes are again provided on the rear face of each brake ring. The projecting segments defining the grooves and tho projections interengaging bayonet fashion therewith may be cast on or rolled on the carrier disc (or wheel) and rings. The braking outer face of the brake ring may lie in the same plane as, and extend to, the side wall of rail wheel rim to form a composite braking surface. In a further modification, Fig. 9 (not shown), the inner wall of the recesses (91) in a wheel disc (93) of a wheel (101) are defined by the hub of said disc and the brake rings 95 are locked against rotation relative to the disc by transverse members (98).
