Abstract

Ca boride is produced by fusing an ore containing B2O3 and CaO with carbon in an arc furnace. Boric acid may also be present. The ore may be colemanite (Ca2B6O11.5H2O) or pendermite. The preferred proportions are 35-45% ore, 32-42% H3BO3, and 18-25% C; or 71-80% ore and 20-29% C. Example 1 is said to produce CaB6.2 containing 3.6% C in the lattice, and Example 2, a mixture of 2/3 CaB6 and 1/3 B4C.
