A thread rolling machine, Fig. 3, in plan, includes a fixed die 10, a reciprocating die 12 driven by a crank 15, and a straight shoot 32 for gravity feeding screw blanks 35 from a hopper 31 to a position between the dies, the shoot being at 30 to 60 degrees to the line of the dies, and the shoot and dies being inclined at 27 to 35 degrees to the horizontal. An injector mechanism 36 and a starter mechanism 37 for the blanks are operated by cams 44 and 45 coupled by gearing 42, 41 and 40 to the driving shaft 18 of the crank 15. The injector mechanism includes an injector finger 51 which is reciprocated by a pivoted lever 54 provided with a cam follower 55, to feed blanks from the end of the shoot. The starter mechanism includes a finger 58 which positions a blank between the dies 10 and 12, the finger being carried on a slide 59 which is reciprocated by levers 63, 65, and 66. The lever 63 is constrained by spring-loaded pins 68 and 61, and a stop 62. The fixed die 10 is adjustable vertically and laterally relative to the machine base, the length of the connecting rod 15 is adjustable by an eccentric mechanism, and the height of the shoot and its cover 80 are adjustable at each end by screws (Fig. 7, not shown). A cam-operated lever (Fig. 12, not shown) may be provided for preventing blanks from becoming jammed between the dies.
