Abstract

1,196,064. Magnetic data storage; 'supporting heads. COMPAGNIE GENERAL D'AUTOMATISME. 27 March, 1968 [30 March, 1967], No. 14688/68. Headings G4C and G5R. An annular magnetic data track carried by an article 3 is centred 7 for a read-out by a head 26 rotatable about the central axis and movable radially and axially, its operative surface being parallel to the axis when in use. As described, gas bottles 3 are lifted from a conveyer until a protective collar 18 whose inner surface carries the track abuts the rim 17 of the outer one 14 of three coaxial barrels 14, 13, 36. An hydraulic ram 11 lowers the barrels until the outer barrel 14 is stopped by a fixed sleeve 16, in which it is splined for vertical movement, then the inner barrels 13, 36 continue to be lowered against spring 15 until an abutment 19 engages the barrel 14, the intermediate barrel also being confined for vertical movement only. In this position, a cam 14a operates plunger 28 to energize a motor to rotate the inner barrel 36 which carries the head 26 on an outwardly biased arm 21 normally cammed inwardly by extension 20 of barrel 14. The head is rotated 360 degrees then reversed as the barrels are raised, the head conductors passing up through barrel 36 and out through opening 31 to a tray on which they are coiled to permit rotation. Data handling.-A binary-coded number allocated to each article is recorded three times in the track, preceded each time by a succession of pulses (Figs. 9, 10, not shown) which on read-out operate a threshold circuit 140, Fig. 11, controlling a gate 150. The data is coded as positive pulses for "ones" and negative pulses for "zeros". On readout, the first recorded number is stored in memory 160 until the second number is read out whereupon the data stored in 160 is transferred to 170 while the second number is stored in 160. The procedure is extended to memory 180 for the third number and a comparison made in unit 200 of each number thus stored, cell by cell, and the majority number transferred to memory 210 for subsequent decoding. The system may provide a warning (not detailed) if the threshold pulses occur before the memory is filled.
