Abstract
1,191,368. Producing alloys. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. Sept. 10, 1968 [Sept. 21, 1967], No. 43078/68. Heading C7D. Alloys of Sr and/or Ba are produced by reacting a compound containing Sr and/or Ba at 650-1700 C. with vigorous agitation in a mains frequency induction furnace with a melt of a Si-alloy containing at least 0À5%wt. and not more than 70% wt. of Mg, Ca, Al or a mixture of 2 or more of these, whereby the Sr and/or Ba is/are incorporated into the alloy melt. If heating and agitation is provided by means of a mains frequency induction furnace, the preferred temperature range is 1000-1450 C. Suitable compounds of Sr and Ba are the oxides, carbonates and sulphates. A carbon additive can be included in the melt which is usually held in a carbon-lined or graphite crucible. Other possible additives are alkali halides, alkaline earth halides, borax, and aluminium chloride. The compound containing Sr and/or Ba together with additives if required is supplied portionwise to the bath surface, with the furnace heat switched off. The portion melts and is stirred into the bath as the heat is switched on again. The process is repeated as necessary.
