Abstract

1,189,762. Packaging in tubular material. BRITISH CELLOPHANE Ltd. 2 Jan., 1969 [15 Jan., 1968], No. 2157/68. Heading B8C. [Also in Division B5] In a package machine, a continuous heat seal is formed between overlapping portions 7, 8 of a heat-sealable wrapping material 1, e.g. heatseal coated polypropylene, by passing the overlapping portions through a channel 9 defined between plates 10, 11 the facing surfaces of which are formed with staggered ridges and troughs parallel to the direction of movement of the material 1 and at least one of the plates being heated. The plates 10, 11 are fluted, corrugated or castellated and are preferably formed of aluminium. The plate 11 is electrically heated and the plate 10 may be heated or may be cooled by a fluid circulating through a coil. The wrapping material 1 is withdrawn from a roll 2 and passes around a tube former 6. The overlapping longitudinal edges 7, 8 of the tube are sealed by the plates 10, 11. After formation of the tube 1<SP>1</SP>, goods 16 are introduced therein and reciprocating jaws 14, 15 transversely seal and sever the tube into individual packages. The jaws 14, 15 move downwards when closed so as to feed the sheet over the former 6 and through the channel 9.
