A tamper-proof container 22 includes a threaded closure 10 having an upper portion in the form of a cap 36 and a lower portion in the form of a separable ring 18, the ring 18 being connected to the skirt 14 of the cap 36 by circumferentially spaced frangible bridges 19. The curl 20 on the ring 18 is formed with a number of detents 34 which co-operate with detents 27 on the neck of the container 22 such that as the cap is rotated to open the container, the ring 18 is held stationary in order that the frangible bridges 19 may be broken to remove the cap completely from the container. The neck of the container has a reduced diameter portion 23 and the detents 27 on the neck are formed such that as the cap is rotated reaction forces between the detents 34 and 27 force the ring 18 to fall freely over the neck portion 23 until it hits a shoulder on the container in which case illicit opening is easily detected. As shown the cap is provided with a sealing gasket of flowable plastics material, the threads being formed in this material. Alternatively, a sealing gasket may be provided beneath the skirt top with the threads being formed in the skirt, Figs. 7-11 (not shown). In further alternatives, the detents on the container may be formed as protuberances and the detents on the ring as hollows. The ring need not have a curl in which case the surface of the ring has detents contiguous with the detents on the container, Fig. 6 (not shown). Capping.-The closure may be applied to the container using a press-on punch which causes the flowable plastics material to form a thread with the thread on the container and pushes the curl 20 into the detents 27 on the container. The punch may be continuous or may engage the curl at spaced points, Fig. 3 (not shown).
