[Also in Division F4] An electric furnace for heating or vaporizing fluid, gaseous or solid materials comprises a container C<SP>a</SP> housing a vessel V<SP>a</SP> into which the material is supplied through a tube 24<SP>a</SP> and discharged through a line 22<SP>a</SP>, the outer wall of which vessel being heated by a heat sink mass of metal, e.g. lead, within the container having a melting point below and a vaporizing point above the operating temperature of the furnace, which metal is made molten by an electric resistance heater element H<SP>a</SP> disposed adjacent the vessel and operative to create convection currents in the molten metal to enhance heat transfer. A series of such vessels may be mounted in a single container having heatinsulated walls and partitions of polished metal to inwardly reflect heat to the vessels and the inlet tube may be formed in helical fashion about the vessels to act as a preheater for the material prior to entry into the vessels from a common supply header. Several heater elements may be provided about each vessel.
