Abstract
1,186,699. Emulsion polymerization of acrylates and methacrylates. FUJI SHASHIN FILM K.K. 3 Nov., 1967 [4 Nov., 1966], No. 50205/67. Heading C3P. [Also in Division G2] An aqueous dispersion comprises (a) a polymer of a C 1-8 alkyl acrylate or methacrylate, and (b) a surfactant of formula wherein R is a hydrogen atom or a C 1-18 alkyl group, R<SP>1</SP> is a C 1-18 alkyl group, M is an alkali metal or ammonium group, m is 0 to 20, and n is 3 or 4. The polymer dispersion is obtained by conventional polymerization in the presence of the surfactant. The average diameter of the particles in the dispersion is suitably 0À01 to 1 micron. The examples describe the polymerization of butyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate and of ethyl acrylate in the presence of potassium persulphate and the following surfactants: sodium 13-(p-nonylphenoxy)-5,8,11- trioxa-tridecane - 1 - sulphonate, sodium 28 - (pnonylphenoxy) - 5,8,11,14,17,20,23,26, octoxaoctacosane - 1 - sulphonate, and sodium - 31- (p - nonylphenoxy) - 5,8,11,14,17,20,23,26,29- nonoxahentriacontane-1-sulphonate.
