Abstract
1,184,094. Silica sols. DEUTSCHE GOLDUND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT. 6 March, 1967 [10 March, 1966], No. 10416/67. Heading C1A. In a process for the preparation of stable silica dispersions containing up to 40% by weight of silica, silica derived from quartz and carbon in an electric arc and having BET specific surface area of 150-250 m.<2>/g. and average primary particle size of 5-35 Á is added to aqueous alkali while stirring and cooling to below 28‹ C., the resulting suspension is dispersed with a turbine agitator while cooling to below 28‹ C., a monohydric aliphatic alcohol, a primary or secondary aliphatic amine or an aliphatic ketone is added as stabilizer, and impurities, after settling, are removed. The alcohol, and each aliphatic group in the amine or ketone contains 1 to 4 carbon atoms. Specified stabilizers are methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl alcohols, methylamine, ethylamine, di-ethylamine and acetone used in a quantity of 1-10% by weight based on the silica content of the dispersion. If the pH of the dispersion is above 10, all silicon carbide impurity readily settles out for removal by decantation or centrifugation.
