Abstract

1,183,574. Knitting. COURTAULDS Ltd. 6 June, 1967 [7 June, 1966], No. 25251/66. Heading D1K. [Also in Division A3] A knitted garment is produced on a two bed flat knitting machine by simultaneously knitting a number of tubular portions and then joining them together to form a single tubular portion and continuing to knit that or vice-versa wherein the wales in the portions lie at an angle to each other in the finished article. As shown in Fig. I a Raglan style pullover is formed in this way. Firstly six welts 4 are produced, three on each bed, and then three tubular portions 1, 2 and 3 comprising body and sleeve portions are formed by three separate yarn carriers 7, 8 and 9 Fig. 3, knitting taking place on one needle bed on one traverse and on the opposite needle bed on the return traverse of the yarn carrier and cams. When the knitting has reached the arm hole 5 the arm portions which have been separated by one needle space, 11, from the body portion are moved inwardly so that the loop 13 is transferred to the needle 14 and all other arm loops are correspondingly moved as in line B of Fig. 3. Tubular knitting is continued as in line C on all body and arm needles and the body and/or arm portions are decreased according to requirements. Various types of sleeves and shoulder patterns can be produced by decreasing or by increasing with the use of tuck loops formed in the opposite bed. Garments can be shaped in three dimensions by increasing the number of needles used on one bed once in a given number of courses. Garments such as "cat-suits" can be produced by knitting initially four tubular portions and eventually joining them up to form a single tubular portion.
