1,183,398. Doors for resisting fluid pressure. A. J. RILEY & SON Ltd. 20 Aug., 1968 [29 Sept., 1967], No. 44580/67. Heading F2P. [Also in Division E2] Closure mechanism for a door 3 adapted to fit to, and close, the mouth of a pressure vessel 1 comprises a plurality of latch members 7 which are rectilinearly reciprocable in a direction substantially in the plane of said closure member, towards and away from the edge of the door when closed in order to lock it in a closed position, or to release it for opening, and a rotatable cam mechanism 13, 14 for reciprocating the latch members 7. As shown, the latches 7 are slidably accommodated in slots formed by the front face of an L-shaped flange 2 around the mouth of the vessel 1, a latch retaining ring 9 secured to the flange 2 by bolts 8, and interposed spacer members 11, the pins 13, carried by an operating ring 12 rotatable, e.g. by pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical, or manual means, in a step in the front edge of the flange 2, co-operating with inclined channels 14 in the inner faces of the latch members 7 to cause the latter to move radially inwardly to hold the door 3 locked and radially outwardly to be withdrawn from the locking position. The securing bolts 8 pass through slots 10 in the latch members 7 which are bevelled at their lower inner edges to force a seal 6 on the door against the flange 2. Several of the latches may be replaced by those having an inclined part (16), Fig. 5 (not shown), of the channels (17) to ensure an initial tightening of the joint 6 before the door is finally locked. As a safety precaution one, or more, of the latches may be cut away to the lower surface of the slot 14 so that the corresponding pin, or pins, 13 have no upper bearing surface, the latch, or latches, being left in its or their locking position, or positions, when the others are raised.
