Abstract

1,183,298. Hydrogenated diene polymers. BRIDGESTONE TIRE K.K. 17 July, 1968 [20 July, 1967], No. 34141/68. Heading C3P. A rubbery composition comprises (a) 100 parts by weight of a hydrogenated hydrocarbon copolymer having a glass transition temperature of above - 100‹ C. and having polymeric monomer units which consist of (1) vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon units of from 5 to 60% by weight; (2) conjugated diolefin units of less than 85% by .weight; and (3) hydrogenated conjugated diolefin units of not less than 10% by weight, wherein the vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon units are essentially randomly distributed in the polymeric monomer units; and (b) from 5 to 200 parts by weight of an inorganic reinforcing filler of which the number average particle diameter is smaller than 500 mÁ. Vinyl aromatic hydrocarbons: styrene and α-methyl styrene. Conjugated diolefines: 1,3-butadiene and isoprene. Fillers; carbon black, hydrous silica, hard clay and the carbonates, hydroxides, oxides, silicates or sulphates of aluminium, barium, calcium, magnesium, silicon, titanium and zinc. The rubbery composition may be prepared by copolymerizing 5-60 parts by weight of vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon and 95 - 40 parts by weight of conjugated diolefin either by solution polymerization (through the use of a catalyst) or by emulsion polymerization (radical type initiator), selectively hydrogenating the diolefin units of the resulting copolymer in a viscous toluene solution in the presence of a catalyst obtained by mixing an organic compound of nickel, cobalt or iron with an organometallic compound of a metal from Groups I, II and III of the Periodic Table (or other coinpounds specified below) and, optionally, olefirii cally or acetylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon, precipitating the hydrogenated copolymer by acetone or methanol acidified with hydrochloric acid and mixing it with the filler and, if desired, other conventional ingredients. Organic compounds of nickel &c.: nickel, cobalt or iron naphthenates, nickel or cobalt octanoate, bis (acetylacetone) nickel, tris (acetylacetone) cobalt, bis (ethyl acetoacetate) nickel, bis (salicylaldehyde) nickel, bis (8- hydroxyquinoline) nickel, tris (8-hydroxyquinoline) cobalt, bis (3,5-diisopropyl salicylic acid) nickel. Organometallic compounds: n-butyllithium, diethyl magnesium, triethylaluminium, triisobutylaluminium, triamylaluminium and diethylisobutylaluminium. Lithium aluminium hydride and sodium borohydride may be used instead. The rubbery compositions exhibit high-tensile strength in the unvulcanized state and can be used in the manufacture of many articles, including cements and paints.
