Abstract

In a converter steelmaking process the intensity of radiation from the flame is monitored and from that intensity there is calculated the instantaneous value of decarburization rate; the refining conditions are then modified so that the decarburization rate follows a predetermined curve. The process may be varied by integrating the instantaneous values of decarburizing rate against time, and plotting the resultant value of carbon eliminated, this curve being compared against a predetermined control curve and any deviation reduced by varying the refining conditions. Corrections may be applied to the measured value, or the parameters deduced therefrom, to compensate for the effect of lime additions or of foaming slag. In a preferred embodiment of the invention it is the luminous energy of the flame which is measured.
