Abstract
1,181,162. Photo-electric position finding. PLANET MINING CO. PTY. Ltd., and OFFSHORE DRILLERS PTY. Ltd. 31 May, 1967 [7 June, 1966; 16 Feb., 1967], No. 25097/67. Heading H4D. [Also in Division G2] The position of a station P is determined by radiating a rotating laser beam therefrom and differentially timing thereat reflexions or retransmissions from responder beacons at known positions. In the embodiments the laser beam originates in a helium-neon gas laser giving light of wavelength 6000 Š or higher and is fan-shaped in the vertical plane utilizing, e.g. fibre optics. A responder beacon may be a corner reflector (see Division G2) or a radio transmitter triggered on reception of the laser beam by a photo-diode to transmit a radio signal to P. A pulse train, e.g. 100 pulses per degree of laser beam rotation at P is gated by the beacon replies to give a visual digital display of the angle subtended at P by two beacons and a similar further angle affords position fixing. The angle values may be magnetically recorded for later charting. P may be a ship: an inertially stable platform is then provided.
