Abstract

A lubricating composition comprises an ester basestock consisting of one or more liquid neutral polyesters that have been prepared by reacting together under esterification conditions and in one or more stages: (i) a mono- and/or polyhydric alcohol having 5-15 carbon atoms per molecule and having no hydrogen atoms attached to any carbon atom in a 2-position with respect to any -OH group; and (ii) a mono- and/or polycarboxylic acid having 2-14 carbon atoms per molecule, the base oil having dissolved therein: (a) 0À005 to 0À15% wt. of dihydrocarbon hydrogen phosphate of the formula (RO) 2 P(O)OH where the groups R (which are not necessarily the same in any given molecule) are alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl groups having up to 20 carbon atoms; (b) 0À005 to 1À5% wt. of a copper passivator; and (c) 0À5 to 6À0% wt. of an aromatic amine antioxidant. The ester may be prepared by reacting one or more of the following: 2: 2: 4-trimethylpentanol, neopentyl alcohol, neopentyl glycol, trimethylolpropane, trimethylolethane, pentaerythritol and dipentaerythritol with one or more of the following: caprylic acid, capric acid, caproic acid, enanthic acid, pelargonic acid, valeric acid, pivalic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, 2-ethylhexanoic acid, adipic acid, sebacic acid and azelaic acid. The copper passivator may be imidazoles, pyrazoles, triazoles, salicylaldehyde semicarbazone or a C 1 -C 20 alkyl derivative thereof, and condensation products of salicylaldehyde and a hydrazine derivative or a fatty acid salt thereof such as a C 13 -C 18 fatty acid salt of 1-salicylalaminoguanidine. The antioxidant may be phenothiazine, iminodibenzyl, diphenylamine, phenyl- α- and #-naphthylamines and alkyl derivatives thereof (examples are given). The lubricant may also contain a load-carrying agent of formula (R<SP>2</SP>O) 3 PO where R<SP>2</SP> is alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl, the total number of carbon atoms being 3-60 (examples are given); and a lead corrosion inhibitor, e.g. a C 1 -C 20 alkyl gallate, neopentyl glycol disebacate, sebacic acid and quinazarin; and hydrolytic stabilizers, e.g. amines of formula R<SP>4</SP>(R<SP>5</SP>)NR<SP>6</SP>, where R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> are C 1 -C 4 alkyl groups and R<SP>6</SP> is an alkaryl or hydroxy-substituted alkaryl group having up to 20 carbon atoms such as 2,6-ditertiarybutyl-4- dimethyl aminomethyl phenol.
