Abstract

1,176,740. Making spongy metal. TSENTRALNY NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT CHERNOI METALLURGII IMENI I. P. BARDINA. March 7, 1968, No. 11100/68. Heading C7D. [Also in Division F4] Spongy metal e. g. iron is made by reduction, e.g. at a temperature above 1000‹ C. , in an externally heated shaft furnace wherein the metal oxides B and a solid reducing agent A, e. g. soot charcoal or petroleum coke, move in immiscible flow streams with the flow stream of the metal oxides inside that of the reducing agent. As shown, the furnace comprises a reducing chamber 3 connected by gas ducts 10 to heating channels 9 with a charging arrangement 2 above composed of at least two coaxially disposed funnels, the external funnel (11) being for charging the reducing agent A while the internal (or central) funnel (12) is for charging the metal oxides B. A cooler 4 preferably adjoins the bottom of the furnace. Below is mounted a receiving table 15, having as opening for the passage of sintered spongy metal C, and rotatable blade drums 16 for discharging spent reducing agent from the table. The spongy metal C emerging may be cleaned by rotary metal brushes 6, compacted by rolls 7 and cut up into pieces by shears 8.
