Abstract
1,176,667. Vinyl acetate/ethylene/vinyl ester copolymer. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 22 Dec., 1966, No. 57507/66. Heading C3P. [Also in Division A2] A polymer derived from vinyl acetate, from 1 to 40% by weight ethylene based on the total weight of the polymer and from 0 to 15 weight per cent based on the weight of the polymer of a vinyl ester having the formula wherein R is a hydrocarbon radical containing from 8 to 22 carbon atoms, the polymer having a grade of from 1À2 to 20 centipoise, an intrinsic viscosity of from 0À05 to 0À75 and a plasticity of from 0À03 to 2À7 mm. may be prepared by polymerizing the monomers in the liquid phase in the presence of a solvent. In the examples, vinyl acetate, ethylene and vinyl stearate and copolymerized in the presence of acetone, ditert-butyl peroxide and di-acetyl peroxide. The polymers are used as chewing gum bases and are mixed with powdered cane sugar, corn syrup, peppermint oil and polyvinyl acetate.
