Abstract

1,175,760. Silica foam. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 21 Dec., 1967 [22 Dec., 1966; 17 Oct., 1967], No. 58100/67. Heading C1A. An aqueous foam comprises 60% by weight of colloidal silica based on the weight of water + silica, and a nitrogen-onium compound or amine containing 1 or 2 alkyl chains of at least 8 carbon atoms. A preferred range is 4-50% by weight of colloidal silica and the foam may contain 0À01-5 mol. per cent of the onium compound or amine based on the silica content. Preferably, the onium compound has 10-50 carbon atoms and contains 1 or 2 alkyl chains of 10-20 carbon atoms. The amine used may have 10-40 carbon atoms and contain 1 or 2 alkyl chains of 10-20 carbon atoms. The onium compound or amine may be a substituted amine or an ammonium, imonium, hydroxyl ammonium, diazonium, hydrazonium, or guadonium compound and the compound or the amine used is preferably substituted by a straight or branched chain aliphatic group of 1-24 carbon atoms, or by a cyclo-alkyl, aryl or alkyl substituted aryl group. Large numbers of amines and onium compounds are listed in the Specification, a preference being expressed for cetyl-trimethyl-ammonium chloride. The silica sol used is preferably stabilized by the addition of sodium hydroxide. The colloidal silica preferably has an average particle size of at least 100 n.m., preferably 5-25 n.m. and most preferably 7-15 n.m. The foams are produced by mechanically agitating or submitting to other conventional foam-producing methods an aqueous mixture having the same composition as the final foam. The foam may incorporate a filler which may be particulate or fibrous, the filler being present in an amount of up to 1500% by weight based on the weight of the silica. Many examples of fillers are given in the Specification. The water may be removed from the aqueous foams of the invention by drying.
