Abstract
1,174,765. Fuel cell. ENERGY CONVERSION Ltd. 29 March, 1967 [29 Dec., 1965], No. 55144/65. Heading H1B. The invention comprises a fuel cell having a semi-solid electrolyte body in which at least one reactant chamber is formed by a recessed member applied thereto and is sealed by fused material disposed between the member and the body. In the embodiment illustrated electrolyte body, 11, is a flat disc of porous MgO the pores of which are filled with a mixture of 41% Li 2 CO 3 and 59% Na 2 CO 3 and is sandwiched between electrodes 12 and 13, a fuel electrode of porous Ni and an oxidant electrode of porous silvered zinc oxide. The electrodes are backed by conductive grids 14 and 15 and are retained in contact with the electrolyte by recessed caps 18 and 19. The caps may have internal projections to press the electrodes against the electrolyte. Flanges 20 and 21 are sealed with fused material 24 and 25. Fuel, e.g. H 2 , and oxidant, e.g. air or O 2 are supplied via inlets 28 and 29. The cell may initially be heated with gas jets (not shown) but is later self-heating. The sealing material may be the same or different from the electrolyte and material lost by seepage or evaporation may be replaced automatically from a reservoir in communication with the grooves 22 and 23. The recessed members may be conducting and serve as current collectors or may be non-conducting.
