Abstract
1,174,669. Stabilized chlorinated hydrocarbons. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 7 Dec., 1967, No. 55622/67. Heading C5D. A stabilized saturated aliphatic chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent composition contains, as inhibitor against metal-induced deterioration, 0À01-15% by volume of dioxene or dioxadiene or mixtures thereof. The chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent preferably has 1 or 2 carbon atoms and from 1 to 6 chlorine atoms, or mixtures of such compounds. 2 to 7% of the stabilizer, by volume is usually present; other stabilizers may also be present without materially affecting the system, for example, dioxane, nitroalkane, epoxides, non-primary alcohols, tertiary alkyl amines and/or alkanolamines. Solvents specified are methyl chloroform, methylene chloride, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, 1,1- and 1,2-dichlorethane, 1,1,2-trichlorethane, and 1,1,2,2- and 1,1,1,2 - tetrachlorethane. The stabilizers not only prevent corrosion when the solvent is in contact with metals, especially aluminium, iron and zinc, but they remain in the solution when the solvent is cleaned by carbon absorption technique.
