Abstract

1,171,947. Reciprocating pumps. CALMAR Inc. Feb.28, 1967 [March 1, 1966], No.9445/67. Heading F1A. A hand-actuated, spray pump for mounting on a container comprises a bucket piston 27 movable against a spring 31 in a pumping chamber 30, the piston frictionally engaging the stem 58 of an inlet valve 23 to open and close the valve at the beginning of the suction stroke and delivery stroke, respectively. At the end of the suction stroke, as shown, constricted portion 59 of the piston frictionally engages portion 60b of the valve stem to seal the piston interior from chamber 30, to prevent leakage during shipment with the plunger 25 extended, sealing ring 38 preventing leakage past the plunger. On the delivery stroke, inlet valve 23 is seated and valve stem portion 60b is released by constriction 59. Delivery takes place through plunger passage 29, passage 61, ball valve 48 and orifice 45. At the end of the delivery stroke, portion 60a of the valve stem seats in the end of passage 61 to provide a shipping seal, and portion 32 of the piston frictionally engages portion 65 of the valve stem to open the inlet valve on the next suction stroke. The plunger can be locked in its retracted position by a threaded roller 56. The container is vented during the suction stroke through aperture 69 and the clearance between reduced diameter portion 26 of the plunger and seal 38. The inlet valve 23 has a splined disc 35 sliding between housing splines 34, the bottom of spring 31 limiting upward movement of the valve. The function of valve 48 may be taken over by sufficiently constricting orifice 45. In assembling the pump, the valve 23 and spring are first placed in the pump chamber 30, piston 27 then being forced over the valve stem.
