Abstract

1,171,634. Pencil lead. DAINIHON BUNGU K.K., [trading as JAPAN STATIONERY CO. Ltd.]. 8 Nov., 1966 [10 Nov., 1965], No. 50056/66. Heading B6P. [Also in Division C1] A pencil lead comprises carbon black particles, graphite and/or mica particles and carbonized material acting as binder, the carbonized material being derived from a synthetic resin, a solvent for the resin and a plasticizer for the resin. The lead is formed by kneading a mixture of carbon black particles, graphite and/or mica particles, a synthetic resin, a solvent for the resin and a plasticizer for the resin, extruding the mixture to form the lead, heating the mixture up to 300‹ C. sufficiently slowly to avoid cracking and thereafter heating at 800- 1400‹ C. to carbonize the resin, solvent and plasticizer to form a binder for the lead. The resin may be polystyrene, silicone resin, polyethylene, acrylic resin, melamine resin, phenol resin, urea resin, polyisobutylene, a polyester, polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride/acetate copolymer, a polyvinyl resin, a stearate resin or a mixture of two or more thereof. In an example vinyl chloride resin is used together with methyl ethyl ketone solvent. The heating may be in an evacuated oven or in an inert atmosphere, e.g. nitrogen.
