Abstract

1,171,068. Preserving liquids. DR. RICHARD EIFERT WIRTSCHAFTSPRUFUNGSGES. und STEUERBERATUNGSGES. m.b.H. 25 Sept., 1968 [26 Sept., 1967; 11 Sept., 1968], No. 45543/68. Heading A2D. [Also in Division C6] A method of treating a dispersion by altering its electrical charge comprises exposing the dispersion to a displacement current field by pulse-wise discharge of a high-voltage capacitor between two electrodes, the dispersion acting as an electrolyte, and exposing the dispersion to strong electro-magnetic force(s) in an induction coil. Milk or beer may be pasteurised and ambient temperatures by application of the method. The dispersion is fed through an induction coil 11 made from a plastics material cylinder lla and a winding lib of insulated copper wire, into a cascade vessel 12 having two series of internal partitions 13 1-6 and 14 1-5 acting as carbon electrodes. Postive electrodes 14 5 and 14 4 near the outlet and are connected and disconnected by a switch 20, preferably a gas discharge vessel, with at least one high-voltage capacitor C, Fig. 3, and the positive electrodes 14 3 , 14 2 , and 14 1 at the inlet end are earthed through capacitors C 3 , C 2 and C 1 . The negative carbon electrodes are earthed by a line 21 through the winding 11b. In operation, capacitors C 3 C 2 and C 1 are charged by the liquid under treatment, acting as electrolyte, from the voltage which remains after the high-voltage capacitor C has been discharged. Groups of cascade vessels may be connected in parallel and/or series. The cascade vessel may be compounded of polyethylene annular pressure elements 23, Figs. 7 and 8, suspended by lugs 28 on tension rods 29 and protected externally by a steel casing ring 26. Liquid dispersion passes sequentially through an overflow duct 38 in one compartment and down through annular ducts 39 to the inlet 37 of the next compartment, and sediment is drawn off at an outlet 27. Each electrode is connected to an external electrode connection 36 by a carbon rod 35.
