Abstract

1,169,071. Casting processes; cooling moulds. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 15 Jan., 1968 [7 Feb., 1967; 23 Aug., 1967], Nos. 5847/67 and 38887/67. Heading B3F. In an electroslag process for casting an ingot 8, a stub 14 at the bottom of the ingot is of the same metal as or of metal compatible with the ingot metal and has an electrical connection to the ingot made through it either by way of the cooled mould base 7 as shown or by way of its cooled supporting clamp (20), in which case there is insulation (19) between the stub (18) and the mould base (also insulated from the mould 1 by a seal 3). The insulation (19) may be moulded in situ from molten slag. The stub 14 ensures electrical connection to the ingot 8 even if the latter loses contact with the mould bottom 2; it may be severed for re-use. A number of electrodes 9 may be melted in the mould 1 by a multi-phase supply and the process described in Specification 1,143,862 used to hot top the ingot 8 finally. A water curtain 5 cools the mould 1. The stub 14 may be preformed and gripped by a clamp 13 to become welded as at 17 to the ingot 8 or it may be cast in situ in a recess in the mould base 2 at the beginning of the process. The electrodes may be of unalloyed constitutents of a final alloy ingot.
