Abstract

1,167,979. Foamed butadiene/styrene copolymer. BORG-WARNER CORP. 13 Dec., 1967 [27 Dec., 1966], No. 56711/67. Headings C3C and C3P. A foamed copolymer of 25-50 wt. per cent butadiene copolymerized with 75-50% of styrene having an Arthur D. Little ball rebound at 65‹ F. of 5-20% is claimed. The copolymer may be prepared by polymerizing the styrene and butadiene, with optionally 0À25-10% of acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, maleic, fumaric or itaconic acid replacing the styrene or butadiene, in an aq. emulsion, e.g. in the presence of dodecyl benzene sulphonate, potassium oleate, tetrasodium salt of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, potassium persulphate and/or tert. dodecyl mercaptan, to provide a polymeric latex which is then agitated e.g. with an alkylphenoxy (polyethoxy) ethanol, potassium oleate, a styrenated phenol, a triethyltrimethylenetriamine/stearic acid mixture and calcium carbonate, to provide a foam which is gelled, e.g. with a mixture of sodium silicofluoride and zinc oxide, and cured, e.g. by heating at 280‹ F.
