Abstract

1,167,295. Electrically treating polystyrene articles. CAMELEC Ltd. 17 April, 1968 [20 April, 1967], No. 18020/68. Heading C3P. The surface of an article of polystyrene is made wettable by positioning the polystyrene article between two electrodes and discharging an alternating electrical potential of at least 8000 volts between the electrodes and through the polystyrene for a period of time such that the product of the potential and time exceeds 45,000 volt seconds. In Figs. 1 and 2 a polystyrene petri dish (10 and 11) is treated with a discharge from electrodes (12 and 13) connected to a 15,000 volt transformer (16), electrode (13) being positioned by pneumatic cylinder (14) and a timer (17) being used to control the process.
