Abstract

In alkali metal chloride electrolytic cells with flowing mercury cathode, the electrode distance is adjusted by bringing the graphite anodes, singly or in groups, close to the cathode until the oscillations of current or voltage, which occur with a small electrode distance, have attained a predetermined amplitude, e.g. measured as derivative of the current by induction across an annular transformer or as derivative of the voltage by charging a capacitor. The anodes may then be readjusted to a distance corresponding to the desired cell voltage, or the electrode distance corresponding to the predetermined amplitude may be maintained.
