Abstract
1,166,899. Cooling buildings; refrigerating. CARRIER ENG. CO. Ltd. 12 Feb., 1968 [26 April, 1967], No. 19260/67. Headings F4H and F4U. An installation for cooling superimposed enclosures 1, e.g. the rooms of a multi-storey building, comprises a liquid coolant supply line 3, a return line 4, a heat exchanger 5 in each enclosure having its outlet connected to line 4 and its inlet connected through an expansion valve 9 to line 3, and an evaporative condenser 11 arranged outside the enclosure 6 to receive coolant vapour from line 4 and to supply condensed coolant to a receiver 10 at the top of line 3. Fans 6 circulate air over heat exchangers 5. Valves 16, 17 enable a compressor 18 to be included in the circuit so that the system can operate as a refrigeration system when the outside air temperature is higher than the enclosure temperature. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) a pump is provided in line 3 and unevaporated coolant from line 4 passes directly to the receiver from a point upstream of valve 16.
