Abstract

1,166,000. Metallurgical converters. STEEL CO. OF WALES Ltd. 21 Feb., 1968 [23 Feb., 1967], No. 8737/67. Heading F4B. [Also in Division C7] Molten metal is refined in a converter 11 operated by an oxy/burner as disclosed in Specification 1,148,601 (Divisions C6-C7) and sealed to an exhaust hood 20 by a removable two-part seal 23 disclosed in Specification 772,632, said hood 20 having a waste-gas duct 107 connected to a spray washer 103. A pressure element 104 in the hood is connected via a controller 106 to a valve 105 controlling the water supply to the washer, so that the buoyancy of the gases therein and therefore the pressure in the hood and converter mouth are also controlled. A spark box 101 disposed below the duct 107 receives particles of slag and metal carried into said duct 107.
