Abstract

[Also in Division G3] A mill has a grinding chamber 1 enclosing a rotary grinding mechanism, viz. a hammer mill, driven by an electric motor 5. Material to be ground is continuously fed from a hopper 3 by a conveyor 2 into the mill, and ground material is discharged via an electromagnetically-operated shaker trough 4 or a screw. This conveys at right angles to the direction of discharge of ground material. Ground material is thus dammed in the mill discharge duct 10, material remains in the chamber for a predetermined period, by speed control of the feed and discharge devices. In operation, if the power input to the motor 5 increases, e.g. because more energy is required in the grinding chamber 1, the operating voltage for the trough 4 increases and consequently the discharge rate, since the trough is powered via a transformer 6 and control device 7 in the circuit for the motor 5. The power input is thus set by the control 7 and the energy available for grinding is maintained constant, the degree of grinding being determined by the quantity of material fed in. The electrical coupling between the conveyor 4 and the mill 1 may be replaced by a mechanical coupling.
