Abstract

1,165,759. Alkylation of isoparaffins. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP. 23 Nov., 1966 [1 Dec., 1965], No. 52526/66. Heading C5E. A process for alkylating an isoparaffin (e.g. isobutane) with an olefin (e.g. isobutylene) in the presence of H 2 SO 4 , wherein the used H 2 SO 4 is contacted with an olefin (e.g. propylene) to form alkyl sulphates which are then returned to the alkylation, is improved by contacting the used H 2 SO 4 with a stoichiometric excess of olefin (on the basis of complete conversion of sulphuric acid to dialkyl sulphates) in an absorption zone, withdrawing from said zone an effluent hydrocarbon phase comprising unreacted olefin and an effluent acid phase comprising dialkyl sulphates and alkylation contaminants, passing at least part of said hydrocarbon phase to the alkylation reaction, separating dialkyl sulphates from said acid phase, and passing at least part of said dialkyl sulphates to the alkylation reaction. The absorption "zone" may comprise two absorbers, into the first of which gaseous olefin is fed, and into the second of which liquid olefin is fed. The separation of the hydrocarbon and acid phases leaving the absorption zone may be enhanced by injecting isobutane into the mixture, and separation of dialkyl sulphates from the acid phase may be achieved by extraction with isobutane in a tower. The extraction tower may have a reverse temperature gradient. Two flow sheets (not shown here) illustrate alternative process schemes.
