Abstract

1,165,161. Winding tape helically around elongate formers. A. REYROLLE & CO. Ltd. 7 Oct., 1966 [9 July, 1965], No. 29327/65. Heading B8G. Tape is helically wound on an elongate longitudinally curved or angled former 9 by forming a spiral coil on a support or spool 20 surrounding the former, fixing the inner end of the tape to the former, causing the spool 20 to rotate about, and advance along, the former so that the tape is helically wound on the former with the coil rotating relative to the spool. Tape may be wound on spool 20 from a supply reel 39 before the winding on the former starts, or during the initial winding on the former. The spool comprises a plurality of coil supporting rollers, a pre-tensioner arm 86 resiliently pressed against the outside of the coil, and tension means through which the tape passes from the innermost turn of the coil to the former and comprising a row of rollers spring pressed against a second row with the tape passing in one direction through at least one roller nip and then back in the opposite direction through the roller nip so that the tape frictionally slides over itself. From the tension means the tape passes to the former via a roller which may be resiliently mounted to prevent sudden changes in tension in the tape. The spool is rotatably supported by rollers 22 mounted on a turntable on a carriage 15, and has a drive wheel driven by an electric motor. The carriage 15 is driven along rail 14 by motor 30. Alternatively, the spool may be rotated and advanced manually. The orientation of the axis of the spool 20 is varied during the winding of particular parts of the former by a cam rail 50 being engaged by a cam follower block 51 being rigidly but adjustably secured to the turntable. There may be a separate cam rail 50 for the return trip of the carriage or the connection of the block 51 to the turntable may be adjusted.
